Tim Cahill set to join New York Red Bulls

Everton have agreed to sell attacking midfielder Tim Cahill to New York Red Bulls.

The Merseyside outfit will receive around £1million for the Australia international, who arrived at Goodison Park in a £1.5million deal from Millwall in 2004.

The 32-year-old will now discuss personal terms with the Major League Soccer side, who have former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry in their ranks, before finalising his transfer to the States.

Cahill scored an impressive 68 goals in 279 appearances for the Toffees and was widely-regarded as one of the Premier League’s most lethal attacking midfielders until 2011.

However, last season he contributed his lowest tally of goals since joining the club, scoring three times in 41 appearances.

In a statement, the Red Bulls said: "We are aware of Everton’s statement regarding midfielder Tim Cahill and our club. However, we have no comment at this time regarding him or any other non-New York player."

But it now looks certain that Cahill will become the Red Bulls’ third designated player alongside Henry and ex-Barcelona defender Rafael Márquez.

The MLS side are currently top of the Eastern Conference and would be strongly fancied to finish the campaign in pole position if Cahill arrives.

Everton, meanwhile, have cover in the form of Republic of Ireland international Darron Gibson. The 24-year-old was signed in January from Manchester United, while the club are also expected to complete the permanent signing of South Africa midfielder Steven Pienaar from Tottenham before the end of the month.

The Toffees also have high hopes for highly-rated 18-year-old Ross Barkley, who made six senior appearances for the club last season and is believed to have a bright future in the game.
