Theo Walcott ruled out of Poland clash
Theo Walcott has been ruled out of England’s 2014 World Cup qualifier against Poland on Tuesday after suffering a chest injury in the win over San Marino.
The Arsenal winger picked up the injury just minutes into England’s 5-0 win over San Marino yesterday at Wembley, after he collided with goalkeeper Aldo Simoncini.
A statement from the FA read: “Theo Walcott has been ruled out of the FIFA World Cup qualifier with Poland on Tuesday with a chest injury.
“The Arsenal forward was taken to hospital following a collision with the San Marino goalkeeper on Friday night, he was monitored overnight as a precaution and following scan results will return to his club for further treatment.”
Walcott was admitted to hospital for tests after suffering from breathing difficulties, with fears that he may have picked up broken ribs. It was also reported that he was coughing blood.
England manager Roy Hodgson was left fuming with the challenge, saying: “I don't think it is going to be good. He is in hospital overnight. We can only hope it is bad bruising but he was pretty badly beaten up.”
Tomorrow, the squad will resume training as they aim to get maximum points from these two games, and it appears that Hodgson will not call a replacement for Walcott, as he has Aaron Lennon and Adam Johnson at his disposal in the wing positions.
Other injuries will be assessed tomorrow as well, with Chelsea’s Frank Lampard set to have his knee checked out, while his teammate Ryan Bertrand will be the subject of whether he is fit or not to play if he has recovered from a virus that has kept him out of training from last week.
