SPL clubs reject Rangers newco application

Rangers newco will spend the 2012-13 campaign outside of the Scottish Premier League.

The SPL confirmed in a brief statement that, after a five hour meeting at Hampden, its clubs had voted “overwhelming” against the crisis-club’s application.

“At today’s General Meeting, SPL clubs today voted overwhelmingly to reject the application from Rangers newco to join the SPL,” the statement on scotprem.com read.

The reformed Ibrox club required an eight-to-four majority to secure entry into the SPL and, after failing to win enough votes, they will now spend the forthcoming season in one of the Scottish Football League divisions.

At this stage it’s unclear which league the Glasgow outfit will be placed into, although the fourth-tier of the Scottish football pyramid remains a possibility.

Rangers FC plc entered administration in February after amassing debts of £134million to unsecured creditors.

A creditors’ deal was then rejected by Revenue and Customs last month, resulting in the formation of a new company.

It became apparent last week that Rangers’ newco stood little chance of being admitted into the SPL, but today’s news has finally provided confirmation for Ally McCoist’s side, who have already lost several key players this summer.

Earlier today Steven Naismith joined Everton on a four-year deal, while the likes of Jamie Ness, John Fleck and Steven Whittaker have also found new clubs after refusing to transfer to Charles Green’s newco.
