Danny Murphy makes Blackburn move
Blackburn boss Steve Kean has called the signing of Danny Murphy “pivotal” as Rovers look to bounce back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.
The 35-year-old midfielder has signed a two-year contract at Ewood Park, marking a first return to North West England since leaving Liverpool in 2004.
The former Crewe man then embarked upon a career in London with Charlton, Tottenham and most recently Fulham, where he played for five years and captained the club in the 2010 Europa League Final.
He played 198 times and scored 28 goals for the Cottagers before leaving when his contract expired this summer – reportedly turning down Premier League Queens Park Rangers and West Ham United to join Rovers.
“Being able to bring Danny on board is a massive boost for everyone and I couldn't be more delighted,” said embattled boss Kean, who remains at Rovers despite overseeing their relegation to the Championship and facing mounting calls to quit.
“His record is there for all to see. He is a model professional, who has a real hunger to keep on playing football and we are thrilled he has decided to commit his future to us.
“This as a pivotal signing for us.”
"I am absolutely delighted to be signing for Blackburn Rovers," said Murphy.
"When meeting Steve Kean I soon realised the passion, enthusiasm and ambition he has for the club and how much he wants the team to bounce straight back up to the Premier League.
"His desire to get me to the club was a huge factor in my decision to join. The owners [Venky's] were also very passionate about their desire to move Blackburn forward as a club and create a squad that is able to achieve promotion.
"I'm excited about my new challenge and can't wait to get started. "
Several other Rovers arrivals are mooted as the club prepare for a first season outside of the top flight in 11 years, with the Newcastle pair of Leon Best and Dan Gosling linked to the club, as well as Murphy’s former Liverpool team-mate Harry Kewell.
One man on the way out of the Ewood Park revolving door is the forward Yakubu, who looks set to become the latest big name to join Chinese football with a move to Guangzhou R&F.
