Championship round-up: Burnley earn bragging rights with Bolton win

Goals either side of half time from Martin Paterson and Charlie Austin earned Burnley a 2-0 win over fierce local rivals Bolton at Turf Moor.

The Clarets earned the bragging rights with a fine opening-day performance against Owen Coyle's side, who are expected to challenge for promotion back to the Premier League after dropping to the Championship last season.

Blackburn were also frustrated on their first match back in the second-tier of English football, as a late Jason Lowe own goal cancelled out Colin Kazim-Richards' first-half strike and meant Rovers' boss Steve Kean was forced to settle for a point.

And new Wolves boss Stale Solbakken got off to a losing start on his first competitive match in charge of the West Midlands club.

Luciano Becchio's first-half stooping header was enough to earn Neil Warnock's Leeds United a 1-0 victory at Elland Road.

Meanwhile, Watford scored two late goals to beat Crystal Palace 3-2 in a thrilling encounter at Selhurst Park.

Owen Garvan netted either side of Martin Taylor's goal to put Palace 2-1 up after 30 minutes, but goals by Almen Abdi and Matej Vydra completed a stunning turnaround for the Hornets.

There was also late drama at St Andrew's, where newly-promoted Charlton thought they had secured all three points when Leon Cort headed in from close range eight minutes before the final whistle, but Nikola Zigic popped up in added-time to rescue a point for the hosts.

Derby and Sheffield Wednesday also earned a point apiece at Pride Park, with the score finishing 2-2.

Elsewhere, Thomas Ince scored a brace as Blackpool beat Millwall 2-0; Leicester beat Peterborough by the same scoreline; Middlesbrough slumped to a surprise 1-0 defeat at Barnsley; Adlene Guedioura scored the winner for Nottingham Forest against Bristol City, while Jay Simpson did the same for Hull at home to Brighton.
