Capital One Cup: No red-letter day for Oldham against Wednesday
Oldham Athletic had not beaten Sheffield Wednesday for eight years and it may be a while longer judged on the way they gave up a 2-0 lead for a 4-2 defeat in their first-round tie at Boundary Park.
Dave Jones, the Sheffield Wednesday manager, had presided over an unbeaten run that has lasted 14 games of last season.
However, it looked like only lasting seven minutes of this campaign. Jordan Slew, who was making his club debut having joined the Latics on a six-month loan deal from Blackburn just a year after leaving Sheffield United, scored a goal that any life-long Blades fan would treasure.
James Wesolowski pulled the ball back from the right byline and Slew slotted home from eight yards at the near post with a low shot and Wednesday went two-up when Jean-Yves Mvoto scored in the 26th minute.
The chance was set up with a cross by Lee Croft which Mvoto headed into the bottom corner from eight yards after getting between the two central defenders. It took more than half an hour for Wednesday to get into the game and when they did Chris Maguire missed the right post and then, in the 44th minute, Nejc Pečnik tried to blast a penalty into the top-left corner but only found someone in the sixth row as the ball flew over the bar.
The Championship side were grateful to Chris Kirkland for a couple of important saves and they finally got a foothold in the game in the 53rd minute when Jermaine Johnson fired one from 20 yards although Alex Cisak, the Oldham goalkeeper, looked culpable of a poor attempt to save.
Then Chris O’Grady, a former Oldham player who had come on as a substitute, scored the second for Wednesday when he rose unchallenged to head from Miguel Llera just after the hour-mark.
Now there was a definite momentum swing towards the away side and O’Grady made the score 3-2 with a sharp turn and shot from six yards out in the 70th minute, with Michail Antonio scoring Wednesday’s fourth three minutes from time.
Fleetwood Town’s hopes of singing Joey Barton on loan were dashed this week as were their progress in this competition with a 1-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest while Preston North End beat Huddersfield Town 2-0 at Deepdale.

The game of two halves is one of football’s oldest clichés but would not be lost on Arsène Wenger after this game.
Premier League round-up: Le Fondre double stuns Chelsea
A late Adam Le Fondre double heaped more pressure on Rafa Benitez as Reading came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Chelsea at the Madjeski Stadium.
